Shared transport
Shared transport can take many forms, whether it’s on roads, tracks or water. The common link is sustainability. The benefits are to personal health, public safety and quality of our environment.

Buses are the dominant public transport in the West of England. Currently, most services are provided by First Bus, with additional ‘supported’ services from Stagecoach, the Big Lemon and other Community Interest Companies (CICs).

Rail suffered major setbacks with the closure of many stations and loss of track during the Beeching era. However there are some thriving lines in the West of England, such as the Severn Beach line that runs from Bristol Temple Meads through the North of Bristol.

Demand responsive transport and community transport are on the increase in our region. Many are run by local people.

There are currently no trams in the West of England but did you know that Bristol was the first British city to introduce electric trams (in 1875), with around 250 vehicles operating on 17 different routes!
